A comparative study on the use of different preparations of decapsulated Artemia cysts as food for rearing African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) larvae OMA
Pector, R.; Tackaert, W.; Abelin, P.; Ollevier, F.P.; Sorgeloos, P..
African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) larvae were fed on five preparations of decapsulated Great Salt Lake Artemia cysts: 1) dried (35°C, 6 h) and UV-irradiated cysts; 2) heated cysts (80°C, 10 min); 3) brine dehydrated and UV irradiated cysts; 4) micro-bound diet 1(with intact decapsulated cysts used in diet preparation 1); and 5) micro-bound diet 2 (with crushed and shifted decapsulated diet used in diet preparation 1). The larvae were fed from the first day after yolk-sac resorption (fourth day after hatching). After a 14-d rearing period, larvae fed on dried or heated decapsulated cysts or micro-bound diet 1. Feeding micro-bound diet 2 resulted in a significantly lower average gain in weight as compared to the other...

A simple semi flow-through culture technique for the controlled super-intensive production of Artemia juveniles and adults OMA
Dhert, P.; Bombeo, R.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A simple semi flow-through Artemia culture unit is described for possible integration in marine fish and shellfish hatcheries as a source of a cheap nursery diet. The system does not require the use of feeding pumps and involves minimal care. Food preparation and addition to the feeding tank is reduced to one or two manipulations per day during the meta-nauplius stages (day 1-3) and the juvenile stages (day 4-14), respectively. Biomass productions are superior to those reported to those for stagnant culture systems and are comparable to those demonstrated for flow-through culture units. This simple rearing technique offers the possibility of producing brine shrimp populations with a uniform size. Furthermore, by varying the feeding...

Action des chocs thermiques sur le developpement d'Artemia ArchiMer
Hernandorena, A.
Heat shocks at 40 degree were delivered to Artemia at the end of embryonic development and at the beginning of postembryonic development and their effects on subsequent development examined. Heat shocks delivered during preemergence development have no effect on subsequent development. Heat shocks delivered to newly hatched nauplii induce anomalies on the morphogenesis of thoracic and genital appendages. The induction of morphological anomalies by thermal conditions prevailing during early larval life makes it easier to integrate the morphological effects previously induced by nutritional conditions imposed to older feeding stages.

An action spectrum for light-induced hatching of Artemia cysts OMA
Van der Linden, A.; Blust, R.; Cuypers, K.; Thoeye, C.; Bernaerts, F..
The influence of light on the hatching induction of Artemia cysts is well known. Our objective was to determine the absorption characteristics of the responsible photoreceptor by action spectroscopy. The results suggest the involvement of a haemopigment located in the gastrula. Haematin, the haemopigment of the cyst shell is demonstrated to have a light-screening function towards the photoreceptor.

An improved separator box for Artemia nauplii and other phototactic invertebrates OMA
Persoone, G.; Sorgeloos, P..
1. A simple cylindrical hatching and separator box is described for Artemia salinanauplii (and other phototactic invertebrates), in which the "corner seeking effect" responsible for poor separation is avoided, and from which nauplii can be recovered very conveniently. 2. Separation is achieved by partly unscrewing an internal and closed cylinder from its fixed counter-part glued to the bottom of the box, till two slits are freed through which the nauplii migrate from the darkened internal hatching cylinder into the illuminated exterior compartment. Rescrewing the former cylinder separates the larvae from debris and unhatched eggs.

Availability of reference Artemia cysts OMA
Sorgeloos, P..
Biometrical, biochemical and food-value characteristics of Artemia nauplii vary with the source of the cyst material. In order to facilitate intercalibration and/or comparison of research conducted with cysts from different sources, homogenous cyst material can now be obtained from the Artemia Reference Center (State University of Ghent, J. Plateaustraat 22, B-9000 Ghent, Belgium). The reference cysts have been tested extensively for hatching characteristics, biometrics, fatty-acid content, pesticide contamination and effectiveness as larval food for various crustaceans and fishes.

Baker's yeast as a potential substitute for live algae in aquaculture diets: Artemia as a case study OMA
Coutteau, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
In this study baker's yeast was evaluated as a substitute for live Dunaliella tertiolecta algae in the culture of the brine shrimp Artemia . Consumption of fresh baker's yeast resulted in poor growth and survival of brine shrimp. However, the nutritional value of the yeast significantly improved after complete removal of the yeast cell wall by enzymatic treatment. Baker's yeast was also made digestible for Artemia by simple chemical treatment which did not reduce rigidity of the yeast cell. The external mannoprotein layer of the yeast cell wall is probably the major barrier to digestion by Artemia . Chemically treated baker's yeast offers promising possibilities as a substitute for...

Barite formation in the Southern Ocean water column OMA
Stroobants, N.; Dehairs, F.A.; Goeyens, L.; Vanderheijden, N.; Van Grieken, R..
The intensity of past biological activity can be correlated with the occurrence of suspended and sedimented barite (BaSO4). To date, there is a lack of information on the processes controlling the production of pelagic barite. During the EPOS-2 cruise (November-December 1988), situated in the Scotia Sea-Weddell Sea Confluence, suspended water samples were taken for analysis of total Ba by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and for scanning electron microscopy-electron microprobe (SEM-EMP).The vertical profiles of particulate barium generally show a Ba maximum between 200 and 500 m. SEM-EMP investigation on Scotia-Weddell Sea Confluence profiles provide a possible explanation for the origin of this...

Biochemical and enzymatic characterization of decapsulated cysts and nauplii of the brine shrimp Artemia at different developmental stages OMA
García-Ortega, A.; Verreth, J.A.J.; Coutteau, P.; Segner, H.; Huisman, E.A.; Sorgeloos, P..
Decapsulated Artemia cysts were used to study the factors which induce the superior performance of live organisms as food for fish larvae. The biochemical composition, the in vitro protein digestibility, and the total proteolytic and trypsin activities in cysts and nauplii of Artemia were determined at different developmental stages as a function of incubation time. Six different incubation times were studied: 1, 6, 11, 16, 21 and 25h of development, which cover cyst and early nauplii stages. The individual dry weight of Artemia decreased through development. The individual protein and lipid content (µg ind-1 remained constant during development until the time of hatching after...

Carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition of different strains of Artemia sp. OMA
Spero, H.J.; Andreasen, D.J.; Sorgeloos, P..
Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios have been determined on 41 strains of Artemia sp. from different geographic regions around the world. The delta 13C and delta 15N values ranged between -13.7 to -25.0 per mil and -0.7 to 21.2 per mil respectively. Artemia delta 13C values from coastal environments are consistent with a marine origin for the food source. Artemia from inland salt lakes have a range of carbon isotope values suggesting C3, C4 and CAM based organic matter could form the base of the Artemia food chain. These data indicate that...

Characterization of Artemia from different localities in Tunisia with regard to their use in local aquaculture OMA
Van Ballaer, E.; Versichele, D.; Vanhaecke, P.; Léger, P.; Ben Abdelkader, N.; Turki, S.; Sorgeloos, P..
Artemia cysts have been collected from different saltworks and natural salt lakes in Tunisia. The cyst material was processed and used for the following characterization analyses: cyst and naupliar biometrics, cyst hatching characteristics, fatty acid pattern of the nauplii, nutritional value of the nauplii for mysid shrimp, naupliar growth rate and temperature resistance, mode of reproduction, and characterization of sibling species. The cross-breeding tests and cyst biometrics reveal that only Artemia tunisiana occurs in Tunisia. Although quality improvements may be expected through improved harvesting, Tunisian Artemia have acceptable hatching characteristics and are a good food for mysid shrimp....

Coadaptation: lessons from the brine shrimp Artemia, "the aquatic Drosophila" (Crustacea; Anostraca) RChHN
GAJARDO,GONZALO; BEARDMORE,JOHN A.
During the fifties Brncic and the Dobzhansky's school, using the fruit fly Drosophila as a test organism, introduced the term integration of the genotype, or genetic coadaptation, which has had great impact on thinking in today's evolutionary biology. In this work we use the brine shrimp Artemia - in many respects a sort of aquatic Drosophila- as a model organism to evaluate the relationship between population structure, potential for divergence and the degree of morphological and/or genetic change. These aspects, tightly linked with the organization of the genotype, are important to understanding how recombination and adaptive release of genetic and phenotypic variation affect the speciation process in Artemia. Analysis of genetic (allozyme, diploid and...

Cofeeding of phospholipids to turbot Scophthalmus maximus L. larvae as a tool to reduce live food consumption OMA
Dhert, P.; González Félix, M.; Van Ryckeghem, K.; Geurden, I.; Thysen, F.; Lebegue, E.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The possible benefits of feeding a formulated diet, together with Artemia , to first-feeding turbot larvae were investigated. Five dietary regimes were used: control ( Artemia only), cofeeding with a diet rich in phospholipid (PL) from bovine brain, cofeeding with a diet rich in free fatty acids (FFA) from the same source, cofeeding with a commercial diet (Lansy A2), and a formulated feed only (PL-rich diet). All treatments with artificial diets and the control treatment that received Artemia exclusively gave a similar survival rate of the fish at day 29. Cofeeding with artificial diets resulted in a lower growth rate than the control treatment. Cofeeding the larvae with PL-rich or FFA-rich diets did...

Comparison of the aerobic metabolism for four strains of Artemia OMA
Bernaerts, F.; Blust, R.; Van der Linden, A.; Thoeye, C..
The respiratory physiology in 35 pro mille artificial seawater has been studied for four strains of adult Artemia . The scope of activity and the potential activity range were studied by measuring the respiratory rate of actively swimming and anaesthetized animals and the respiration of total homogenates. The experiments were carried out at temperatures ranging from 5 to 45°C. The lower lethal value for male and female Artemia from the four strains (Great Salt Lake, Macau and Sfax) being 5°C. The higher lethal value for male Artemia from Great Salt Lake, Macau and Sfax being 45°C, while male animals from San Francisco Bay only survive up to 35°C. Contribution a l'etude de l'elevage de la crevette rose Palaemon serratus (Pennant) en captivite. ArchiMer
Campillo, Albert.
The growth of post-larval P. serratus has been studied until the appearance of secondary sexual characters, in order to eliminate the influence of sex ratio on the mean wt. The influence of temp on intermolt period and number of molts was observed in male and female kept individually. Different sorts of food of natural origin have been tested. The rearing of post-larval lots metamorphosed at different times of the yr showed that the growth of P. serratus is conditioned not only by the temp, but also by the season. The food conversion ratio was defined in relation to the sex and age of the prawns. Shelters allowed the author to obtain a ratio of survival which varied post-larvae per square meter. The sex ratio established from several breedings as soon as...
